Magnetism is the force exerted by magnets when they attract or repel each other. Magnetism is caused by the motion of electric charges. Earth has two geographic poles: the North Pole and the South Pole. They are the places on Earth's surface that Earth's imaginary spin axis passes through. Our planet also has two magnetic poles: the North Magnetic Pole and the South Magnetic Pole. The magnetic poles are near, but not quite in the same place as the geographic poles.
The Earth is a magnet that can interact with other magnets in this way, so the north end of a compass magnet is drawn to align with the Earth's magnetic field. Because the Earth's magnetic North Pole attracts the north ends of other magnets, it is technically the South Pole of our planet's magnetic field. A compass point north because all magnets have two poles, a north pole and a south pole, and the north pole of one magnet is attracted to the south pole of another magnet.
Earth's magnetic field, is the magnetic field that extends from the Earth’s interior out into space, where it interacts with the solar wind, a stream of Charged particles emanating from the Sun. The magnetic field is generated by electric currents due to the motion of convection currents of molten iron in the Earth's outer core driven by heat escaping from the core, a natural process called a geodynamic.
Over the past 150 years, the magnetic North Pole has casually wandered 685 miles across northern Canada. But right now, it’s racing 25 miles a year to the northwest. This could be a sign that we’re about to experience, a magnetic polar flip. And when this happens, it could affect much more than just your compass. Earth's magnetic field is what shields us from harmful space radiation which can damage cells, cause cancer, and fry electronic circuits and electrical grids. With a weaker field in place, some scientists think this could expose planes to higher levels of radiation.
