Hydroelectric Power

Hydroelectric Power

Hydropower has already made a huge impact on the world today. “Hydropower is the largest source of renewable energy in the entire world, producing around 16% of the world’s electricity from over 1 200 GW of installed capacity”. In other words hydroelectric power provides almost one-fifth of the world's electricity. Canada, China, Brazil, Russia and the United States were the five largest hydroelectric power producers in 2004. The biggest hydro plant in the U.S. is located at the Grand Coulee on the Columbia River in northern Washington. One of the biggest hydroelectric dams in the world is located in China at the Three Gorges on the Yangtze river, this dam is 1.4 miles wide and 607 feet tall. Hydropower is expected to remain the largest source of renewable electricity generation by 2023. Hydropower is a very mature technology, but it continues to evolve everyday. Hydropower can also be a very good source of electricity because it costs less than most energy sources. “In fact, all but two states (Delaware and Mississippi) use hydropower for electricity, some more than others. For example, about 74 percent of Washington State’s electricity comes from hydropower”.

As you already know hydropower has been used for thousands of years. It had developed so much since it was first used by the Ancient Greeks. People may think that hydropower can only advance so far, but that is not true at all. Hydroelectric power will keep advancing for years even centuries. Scientists can learn how to make it less expensive, more efficient, make the dams smaller but still have them produce just as much electricity or even more! Everyday engineers, scientists etc will be developing new ways to make hydropower more efficient than it is today. Hydropower will never stop advancing, at least not before I pass away.
Several countries use water or hydropower to power there everyday ordinary lives. Hydropower was first used thousands of years ago by the Ancient Greeks. The Greeks used it to grind large amounts of grain, but hydropower has had several technological advances since then. Hydropower is now used to power homes, buildings, construction sites, factories etc. Humans have been using and taking advantage of hydroelectric power for centuries now. Hydroelectric power is made and stored in a huge damn, generally across large water systems such as rivers. The electricity is then transported through long distance electric lines.
