A new compound that can block cancer

We have been trying to cure cancer for so long now, but so far we have only came up with are treatments, not permanent fixes to cancer. This may be the cure that we have been waiting for. A group of scientists from Australia have now developed a class of compounds that are able to block the activity of cancer cells on a basis that seems permanent. There also aren't any side effects so that is beneficial. The people at Australia wanted to find a drug that stopped cancer cells from dividing but at the same time doesn't harm healthy DNA cells. Tim Thomas and Anne Voss, from the Walter and Eliza institute in Parkville, Australia, with many other specialists concluded that since KAT6A and KAT6B are two of the proteins associated with different cancers, we should try to start to inhibit the protein.
Unfortunately, when two of the most common types of cancer therapy are used, which are radiotherapy and chemotherapy, the surrounding healthy DNA cells and tissue will also be damaged with the cancer cells, with that comes some side effects, such as, hair loss, fatigue, and infertility. The damage that was done to the healthy DNA cells through treatment might even be the reason that more types of cancer follow after that. What these compounds do is instead of affecting the healthy cells along with the bad ones, they just put cancer cells in a permanent sleep, which hinders the growth of tumors. The cancer cells aren't dead when this compound is used, the cancer cells just can't start the cell cycle again, thus not being able to divide and multiply.
Voss and her team also believe that another effect that the compound has on cancer cells could prevent a relapse of cancer later in life. Voss says that we they still need to test the drug and see how it reacts to humans, and that this is the first step in many, but she is hoping that this can be a type of consolidation therapy. Until now, KAT6A and KAT6B have been considered undruggable, or unresponsive to a treatment in the form of drugs. That all just changed because of this compound.
