Atoms in Air

Atoms are everywhere, in the air we breathe, the food you eat, to the water you swim in. Why are atoms in these things? By definition, atoms are “the basic unit of a chemical element”. They are so much more thought, they make up everything in our world. But is the amount of atoms in different things or places vary? For example, when climbing a mountain, why does the air become thinner, and more challenging to breath in? 21% of the air we intake is just atoms! So why does the air get thinner when you get in higher climates.
    About 21% of oxygen we breathe is atoms. The reason the air gets thinner, is because it is closer to the top of the atmosphere. As you get closer to the atmosphere there becomes less atoms, which makes less breathable air. As you know, there are very few atoms in space. So from Earth’s atmosphere, as you get higher up, there becomes less and less atoms, making it become harder and harder to breathe.
    At sea level, the altitude is much more suitable for human life forms, such as most mammals and other animals. The pressure at this altitude is about 15 pounds per square foot. As you rise into a higher altitude, the air still weighs about 15 pounds. When I first learned this, I was shocked. I thought for sure that it would weigh a ton less. After reading more I learned that it is the same amount of air, it’s just that there are less variables in the air. This includes atoms. Now we know a little bit more about these tiny atoms in our world!
