Chemical mixtures in the ocean

Chemical Mixtures in the Ocean

                            By Zach Fluck

The ocean is an are filled with aquatic marine life in its billions of gallons of saltwater that thrives in the pure water. However, as you may know humans have been polluting these waters with oil and chemicals that are detrimental to marine life.

Chemicals are an essential part of our daily lives and lots of them are used every day. However, some chemicals present risks to plants and animals living under water, to the animals eating them, and to humans. Chemicals in surface waters can get there in different ways. “They may have been released into the air, returning later to the earth's surface in rain or dust.” They may also have been directly discharged into water from industry or urban waste water treatment plants or used in agriculture. The risks presented by some chemicals, like metals and organic pollutants such as the pesticide lindane, have been problematic for decades.

Despite successes in addressing some of the most hazardous chemicals, more attention is needed to address the danger posed by the 'cocktail effect' of lower concentrations of chemicals in European lakes, rivers and other surface water bodies, according to a European Environment Agency (EEA) report.

The mixtures of chemicals and oils seeping into water has been affecting ocean life for decades and can soon be the end of entire species. People need to take more recognition and continue to develop ways to stop the problem.
