Controlling the chemical properties to achieve absolute zero
Scientist in labs have been testing experiments on different chemical compounds to achieve around the coldest temperature, absolute zero. I will talk about what is happening now and the new discovery. I will explain what is absolute zero and who named it. Lastly I will talk about were the scientist studying this should go from there. The Institutes to credit this to are the Institute of Chemical Sciences and Engineering.
Controlling all aspects of reactions is very hard until this invention. All aspects that are taking place in a chemical reaction and they are crucial for understanding what happens in that reaction and if any of the factors has an effect on it. A team lead by Andreas Osterwalder from the EPFL Institute of Chemical Sciences and Engineering that also has been working with a theorist from the University of Toronto, created an apparatus that creates an environment that is suitable to create a chemical reaction that is close to absolute zero. According to Science Daily, “...built an apparatus that allows them to control the orientation and energies of reacting atoms, down to nearly absolute zero”. So the apparatus allows the operators to control all factors that play into the chemical reaction.
I will talk about what is absolute zero, were it came from, and who named it and were the name came from. The first person to discover that the coldest temperature is absolute zero was William Thomson also known as Lord Kelvin. William was a british inventor and scientist. In 1848 the Kelvin scale was the known basis of a absolute temperature. Absolute zero in the kelvin scale was zero and celsius would be -273, for fahrenheit it would be -459. Kelvin was used a lot because it had no negative numbers. Absolute zero was named after the lowest point in the scale of kelvin (zero).
The future uses of the discovery of making chemical reactions that are close to absolute zero will be explained by the following. It can created new technology in space because in space it can get pretty cold pretty fast so the suits astronauts would have to wear would be cooled down so temperatures in space could be neutralized. It can be used in construction to cold down metals so the metals could combine into one like how construction workers are using liquid nitrogen to cool down metals. It can also be used to make refrigerators more cold and can keep foods edible. The uses of the chemical reactions are endless there are some of the uses of the new discovery.
