Salting Roads Before Snow Storms
Recently, many snow storms have hit this area. Snow plows and salt trucks work to improve the roads so that people can drive safely. The salt that they use isn't as pure as the salt you put on your food. Its made of sodium chloride (NaC1) Also, it has a particular brownish color due to mineral contamination. But that salt can have bad effects on nature such as bad affects on plants and aquatic animals. But how does the does the salt melt the ice?
In short, the salt prevents water from forming ice crystals on the ground. The salt decreases the freezing point of water by about 15 degrees. But in places were the temperature gets very low, the salt won't help much when it comes to getting rid of the snow. One thing to do is to put sand on the roads in order to provide a less slippery surface for cars to drive on.
