A magnet is any object that has a magnetic field. It attracts objects like iron, nickel and steel. Magnets are made artificially in different shapes and sizes depending on their use. For example, the magnet holding a refrigerator shut is far larger than one being used as a car decal and showcasing your recent vacation.
The magnetic compass needle is commonly used for things like sailing, hiking, driving without a map and other outdoor activities. The compass needle is a very very very small magnet which is free to move horizontally on a pivot. One end of the compass needle points in the North direction and the other end points in the South direction. The end of a freely moving magnet will always point in the North-South direction. The end that points in the North is called the North Pole of the magnet and the end that points South is called the South Pole. It has been proven by experiments that like magnetic poles repel each other whereas unlike poles attract each other.
During China’s Han Dynasty, between 300 and 200 BC, compasses were made but, ironically, they were not used for navigation. They had a much more spiritual use. The early compasses created by the Chinese were used in fortune-telling by geomancy, the interpretation of lines and geographic alinments as symbols of the divine. The navigational compases that emerged from China’s Song Dynasty of the 11th century had a unique design.  There was a spoon that  was placed in the center of a bronze circle and the magnets made it spin around. When it stopped the handle part of the spoon was pointing south and the bowl part of the spoon would point north. These compasses were called ‘South Pointers’. The bronze disc would have cardinal direction points, signs for various constellations and other important symbols and information.
I do not believe that compases will be used much in the  future because of the iPhone compass feature. Also, the human population has already excavated the majority of the planet. Therefore, there is not a real need to discover much else then where we will inhabit.
