FSU Magnet
FSU Magnet
In a laboratory in Florida, there is the
world’s strongest magnet. It is incredibly dangerous but also interesting.
Specifically, it is held at Florida State University and is used for many
experiments. It is called the National High Magnetic
Field Laboratory and it studies physics, biology, bioengineering, chemistry, geochemistry, and biochemistry. I
chose to do the FSU Magnet for my blog due to its relevance in modern times and
its fascinating nature.
The magnet has
many special abilities due to its size. One of these includes the intensity of
its magnetic field. The magnetic field is so strong that it is able to lift 45
tesla. Since many people are unfamiliar with tesla units, I will put it in
perspective. A magnet that can lift a car has approximately 2 tesla.
Not only does
the magnet have incredible strength, it also has broken a world record.
Currently, the laboratory holds the record for nuclear magnetic resonance
spectroscopy experiments in 2016.Nuclear magnetic research spectroscopy, or NMR
spectroscopy “is a research technique that exploits the magnetic properties of
certain atomic nuclei” (Wikipedia). This is an incredibly impressive title and
makes the magnet even more special.
In the future,
we can use this magnet for more experiments and dig deeper into the world of
magnetic fields. However, the magnet is extremely dangerous and may give in
soon to the pressure of magnetic forces on the coils and ultimately destroy
itself. Therefore, people are not allowed into the room with the magnet because
it is utterly unknown when this disaster will strike. This being said, we
should use the FSU magnet while we still can.
