Tidal Power

Image
Claudia Morales Gateways Tidal Power Tidal Power is one of the oldest forms of energy out there.   Its a type of water energy just like hydro power but instead of the wheel its the tides in the ocean. Its renewable energy caused by the tides to create electricity. Tidal Power towers can only be placed by the coastline of anywhere. it`s a tall stick like tower with a huge fan type thing. It doesn't have an actual name its just referred to as a tidal power plant. I personal think that its a great renewable source. Because you can never run out of ocean water unless something comes to suck up all the water of the world forever. But a down side to the towers are that a kid could jump in without knowing it`s dangerous and they could get caught in the spinning fan things. We should make a safer way for the blades to spin because kids could possibly die by bleeding out or drowning.  If we just use the waves without the extra power we could end u...

Pollution

Image
By Ethan Catoe For my topic i chose pollution. i chose pollution because it plays a big role in the  present day, pollution is when an environment contains a substance of harmful or poisonous effects. The major kinds of pollution are usually recognized by environment. Pollution Pollution is the process of land being made, polluted water air and other parts of the environment make it a non suitable resource to use in that environment. Things as simple as light, sound and temperature can be classified as pollutants when they move into an artificially environment. Toxic Pollution Toxic water can and has affected more than 200 million people worldwide, In some of the worlds most polluted places babies are born with birth defects, which causes them to lose 30 to 40 IQ. Life expectancy of people that live in toxic pollution may be as low as 45 years because of cancers and other diseases  Land Pollution Land can become polluted by household garbage and indu...

Robots Coming in your Homes

Image
Robots Coming in your Homes               Sophie Boris Even though it sounds weird robots are slowly coming into your home weather for right now it's a robot who vacuums for you, or your Alexia telling you what time it is. Though it sounds like something out of a The Jetsons robots doing your chores and cleaning your room its very real now. Since even Tesla now even has cars that are driving themselves something that five years ago sounds like a thing out of some Matrix movie. Weather your ready or not robots are coming and everyday there's some new technology coming and helping you out through your day to day life. There are pros and cons though of this, the work of humans aren't as needed as much any more, this could cause I big loss of jobs in the blue collar workers. In a study done by financial services firm Cornerstone Capital Group 7.5 million retail jobs are at risk of take over. Though the econom...

Liquid Air Energy Storage

Image
By Peter Bragdon Liquid Air Energy Storage My topic is liquid air energy storage. It is an environmentally friendly way to store energy. It works by taking excess energy from solar or wind power and using it to power an air liquifier. If energy is needed, the liquid air can be allowed to expand and power a turbine to generate energy. Liquid air is a more environmentally friendly way to store power than batteries. Batteries use toxic chemicals and need to be replaced regularly, resulting in toxic waste. Getting rid of old batteries safely is difficult and costly. In contrast, the liquid air system does not produce a waste product. It uses something we have in ready supply, air. It also produces a safe byproduct, air. Liquid air can be used with other environmentally friendly energy sources such as solar and wind power, making it an ideal storage system for the ultimate environmentally friendly city. Turning air into a storage system for energy requires an air liquifier. Th...

SolarReserve

Alice  Bazyar   October 17, 2018   Solar a nd  Wind Energy May Be Nice, But How Can We Store It?   Solar energy is becoming more common as the cost is getting lesser and as its spreading around the world more. But the only issue is that the sun wouldn’t be out all day as seasons and hours change; that wouldn’t be a  huge issue to  SolarReserve .   SolarReserve  is a company who built a large Solar plant in the Nevada Desert that store energy from the sun up to 10 hours, even after sundown. This can be seen from miles away as it is 640-foot tall and it includes 10,347 mirrors. The heliostats are arranged in a circle which stretches up to 1.75 miles across.   The power is mostly taken from the top of the tower.  "This is really the first utility-size project of this type in the world," says  SolarReserve  CEO Kevin Smith.   The plants ability to store the energy is called molten salt.; you ...

Hydroelectric Power

Image
By Ellen Hederick Hydroelectric Power Hydropower has already made a huge impact on the world today. “Hydropower is the largest source of renewable energy in the entire world, producing around 16% of the world’s electricity from over 1 200 GW of installed capacity”. In other words hydroelectric power provides almost one-fifth of the world's electricity. Canada, China, Brazil, Russia and the United States were the five largest hydroelectric power producers in 2004. The biggest hydro plant in the U.S. is located at the Grand Coulee on the Columbia River in northern Washington. One of the biggest hydroelectric dams in the world is located in China at the Three Gorges on the Yangtze river, this dam is 1.4 miles wide and 607 feet tall. Hydropower is expected to remain the largest source of renewable electricity generation by 2023. Hydropower is a very mature technology, but it continues to evolve everyday. Hydropower can also be a very good source of electricity because it costs less tha...

Red Dwarf Stars

Image
By Chris Anderson Red Dwarf Star Sends Powerful Flares NASA's Hubble Space Telescope spotted a dwarf star named  J02365, shooting out a super flare that is another reminder that alien life would have a hard time living on planets orbiting theses stars. The flare carried  10^32 ergs of ultra-violet energy towards planets hovering around the star. This was much more powerful than any of the suns recorded flares. A team of scientists called HAZMAT is surveying these dwarfs from young, (40 million years old)  medium (about 650 million years) and old (several billion years). They are trying to gather more information on these dwarfs to better understand them. They want to find out more about these stars because they take up the most space in our universe. It is estimated that 75% of the stars in the observable universe are dwarf stars. Many of these most likely have planets in the habitable zone that have a high possibility of containing water. Wh...

Transparent Solar Panels

Image
By Marina Wang Transparent Solar Panels In August 2014, researchers at Michigan State University managed to create a highly transparent solar panels, one of the first of its kind. The solar panels could transform everyday household items, such as windows, into a solar cell able to harness the Sun’s energy. These solar panels could change the way we use energy in the future, when windows and doors and even smartphones could be covered in transparent solar panels, thus ensuring renewable energy is put to use. But how exactly would it work? You see, these new solar panels absorb only infrared and ultraviolet light, letting visible light pass through so our eyes perceive it as transparent. Since all light is made up of electromagnetic radiation within different wavelengths, they all contain energy. But the human eye can only detect one type of energy, called “visible” because we can see it. The solar panels aim to catch all light energy other than visible, with a 70% transmission effi...

Quantum Gravity Takes the Singularity Out of Black Holes

Image
Zach Fluck Quantum Gravity Takes the Singularity Out of Black Holes Until now a black hole has been a point of space and time where the laws of physics seem to break down at point of the black hole called the singularity. This a point of the center at the black hole where gravity extends infinitely. Until now all black hole were thought to contain a singularity. However, a new theory called quantum theory of gravity. In this theory the gravity slowly increases as you get closer to the center, but eventually it reduces. “As if you’ve come out the other end of the black hole and landed either in another region of our universe, or another universe altogether.” Basically, it theorizes that the black hole does not yield at a place of broken down physical laws or infinite density/gravity, but a sort of portal or wormhole that leads to another point in time, a dimension, or a new universe. One piece of evidence to support this is the death of a black hole. A black hole slowly evaporates over ...

Chemical complexities that causes Saturn's rings to change planet’s atmosphere

Image
Ayad Alhazmi 10/19/2018 Chemical complexities that causes Saturn's rings to change planet’s atmosphere New discoveries are made today on Saturn's rings by the Cassini space probe. Based on data from the final orbits of NASA's Cassini space probe shows the rings of Saturn. Some of the most amazing celestial objects in the universe are far more chemically complicated than was previously understood by scientist. When the Cassini space probe first gathered the information from 2017 and the signals of Cassini took scientist a long time to retrieve the information. Also knowing the astrophysicists are still studying it is beyond my reach. I will show you a quote by a professor of physics and astronomy Thomas Cravens. "Two things surprised me. One is the chemical complexity of what was coming off the rings -- we thought it would be almost entirely water based on what we saw in the past. The second thing is the sheer quantity of it -- a lot more than we originally expected. ...
